ITG announces the winners of the 2016 Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Solo Competition

September 3, 2016 - The three-day Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Solo Competition wrapped up today at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Huw Morgan, principal trumpeter of the Sinfonieorchester Basel, won the $10,000 first prize. The $5000 second prize was won by Samuel Huss, a masters student of Barbara Butler at Rice University. Both of these virtuoso musicians performed the final round of competition as soloists with the University of Alabama's Huxford Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Blake Richardson. The two other finalists of the competition were, in alphabetical order, Tessa Ellis (USA) and Marc Sutton (USA). The two semi-finalists were, in alphabetical order, Mátyás Fieszl (Hungary) and Brent Proseus (USA). All contestants performed admirably an extremely demanding series of repertoire for judges Philip Smith (Athens, Georgia), Gabriele Cassone (Milan, Italy), and Andrei Ikov (Moscow, Russia) over the three-day event hosted by Dr. Eric Yates and the University of Alabama.
