David Wharton to Interlochen Arts Academy
Dr. David Wharton is joining the faculty at the Interlochen Arts Academy as Instructor of Trumpet.
Wharton is an active performing artist and sought-after music educator whose work spans the orchestral, contemporary, baroque, jazz, and solo repertoire. He is a member of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly with the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra, Billings Symphony Orchestra, and the Colorado Bach Ensemble. Wharton previously served as Principal Trumpet of the Berkshire Symphony and has performed with ensembles including the Colorado Symphony, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and the Riverside Symphony, among many others. In the chamber music world, he has performed with the contemporary ensemble Le Train Bleu, the Delphi Chamber Orchestra, Quiet City Brass, and Triton Brass Quintet. He was also a founding member of the award-winning Excalibur Brass Quintet.
An accomplished educator, Wharton has previously served on the faculties of the University of Wyoming, University of Rhode Island, Williams College, Bennington College, and the The Hartt School Pre-College. Known for his engaging and inspiring teaching style, he has presented masterclasses and clinics throughout the United States, including appearances at the Oberlin Conservatory, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music, Interlochen Arts Academy, the North American Baroque Trumpet Competition and Conference, and the International Trumpet Guild Conference.
Wharton is especially recognized for his artistry on the baroque trumpet. He has appeared as a soloist and ensemble member of the American Baroque, Indianapolis Baroque, Concert Royal, the Sebastians, the Connecticut Early Music Festival Orchestra, and Yale’s Schola Cantorum. Praised for his refined tone and expressive ornamentation, he won First Prize in the Baroque Division of the National Trumpet Competition in 2007. In 2024, he also served as co-host of the North American Baroque Trumpet Competition and Conference, where five finalists represented Wharton’s trumpet studio.
A graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy himself, Wharton earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Connecticut, a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory. His principal teachers include Louis Hanzlik, Allan Dean, Howard Shear, Roy Poper, Ken Larson, Barry Bauguess, and Jack Sutte. (Source: David Wharton)
