University of Nevada, Reno School of Music Hosts Inaugural High Brass Summit

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Music hosted its inaugural High Brass Summit on April 6, 2026, bringing together middle school, high school, collegiate, and community brass players for a day of instruction, collaboration, and performance.

Guest artists included trumpet soloist and pedagogue Phil Snedecor and hornist Brett Hodge, alongside UNR faculty Natalie Brooke Higgins and Jonathan Bhatia. The event began with a welcome meeting featuring a performance of Jason Dovel’s Centrifuge by the Sierra Trumpets, an affiliate chapter of the International Trumpet Guild, and Andre Lafosee’s Impromptu Suite by the UNR Sage Brass Quintet

Throughout the day, participants engaged in masterclasses, artist Q&A, and topic-based clinics, culminating in mass ensemble rehearsals and a featured artist recital. One of the day’s pedagogical highlights was Snedecor’s presentation, Arnold Jacobs for High Brass, which offered insight into efficient brass playing. Both Snedecor's masterclass and clinic sessions combined practical demonstration with clear, accessible concepts that resonated with performers of all levels.

The evening artist recital served as the musical centerpiece of the summit and showcased the artistry of the guest performers and faculty. Snedecor performed a range of works including original compositions, such as selections from his Lyrical Etudes, Toccata, and an arrangement of “Musetta’s Waltz,” which displayed both stylistic sensitivity and technical brilliance. Hodge’s rendition of Free Fall by Adam Wolf showcased technical agility and musical nuance, while I Wish You Love by Léo Chauliac provided contrast and highlighted his lyrical playing. Additionally, Hodge presented a collaborative performance of Kerry Turner’s ’Twas a Dark and Stormy Night… with Brooke Higgins. Brooke Higgins contributed both as a soloist and chamber musician and Bhatia joined Snedecor, Hodge, and Higgins for a powerful performance of Leonard Bernstein’s A Simple Song (arr. Snedecor), which brought together the full artistry of the guest performers and faculty. The recital also featured ensemble contributions, including performances by the UNR Horn Pack Ensemble, pianist Aren Long, and participant mass choirs.

The University of Nevada, Reno High Brass Summit provided a meaningful and inspiring experience for all involved. Phil Snedecor and Brett Hodge’s presence left a lasting impression, offering both a model of artistic excellence and a compelling vision for the future of high brass performance and education.
