Ken Larson Announces Retirement from Interlochen Center for the Arts Faculty

The International Trumpet Guild extends its congratulations to Ken Larson, Instructor of Trumpet at Interlochen Center for the Arts, on his upcoming retirement.

Since joining the Interlochen faculty in 2002, Larson has played an integral role in developing some of the finest young trumpet players in the country. Many of his students have gone on to perform with major symphony orchestras and distinguished chamber ensembles, a testament to his dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to musical excellence.

Prior to his appointment at Interlochen, Larson enjoyed a diverse and accomplished career in chamber music, orchestral performance, and commercial recording. He has held teaching positions at Pepperdine University, California Lutheran University, and California Institute of the Arts. As a performer, he has appeared with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the San Diego Symphony, and served as Principal Trumpet of the Traverse City Philharmonic. His playing can also be heard on numerous film and television soundtracks, including Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, several installments of the Police Academy series, and Innerspace, among many others.

Beyond his achievements as a performer and educator, Larson is also a respected trumpet builder and craftsman. His company, BrassWerks, is dedicated to the design and construction of custom trumpets tailored to individual performers. For many years, Larson has been a familiar and welcome presence at ITG conferences, where trumpeters not only had the opportunity to play his instruments, but were also greeted with his kindness, warmth, and humor.

At Interlochen, Larson cultivated a collaborative and collegial studio environment. His impact on his students and colleagues has been immeasurable, and his mentorship has guided countless young musicians toward successful collegiate and professional careers. The trumpet community is grateful for Larson’s decades of artistry, craftsmanship, and dedicated service. His legacy will continue to resonate for generations to come. (Source: Reynolds Martin)
