Historic Brass Society hosts “Arban & Kosleck at 200” Symposium

The Historic Brass Society, in partnership with the Conservatoire Nationale Supérieur Musique et Danse in Lyon, France, recently co-hosted a special topical symposium celebrating the lives and legacies of two early cornet pioneers: Jean-Baptiste Arban and Julius Kosleck.

The event was widely attended by early brass scholars, performers, and amateurs from across Europe, South America, and the United States.

This two-day symposium featured a variety of lectures, recitals, and demonstrations, featuring a diverse pool of presenters. Highlights of the symposium included two afternoon roundtable discussions on pedagogy and organology, as well as two evening concerts featuring performances by world-renowned brass artists. Attendees were treated to a closing performance by the Kosleck’sche Bläserbund: a collection of professional musicians performing on authentic nineteenth-century brass instruments and replica natural trumpets.

This event was made possible by the generous support of the Historic Brass Society and Conservatoire Nationale Supérieur Musique et Danse, co-hosted and organized by HBS President-elect Sandy Coffin and renowned early brass specialist, Jean-François Madeuf (also on faculty at the Conservatoire).
