In Memoriam: William “Ritchie” Clendenin (1943- 2025)

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of William “Ritchie” Clendenin (1943-2025). Ritchie was exceptional in every way and a recipient of the ITG Award of Merit in 2023.

Ritchie was a charter member of the International Trumpet Guild, attended many conferences, played in and organized the Festival of Trumpets in 1979 at Arizona State University, and chaired the solo competition at the University of Colorado Boulder in 1981. He was also involved in the International Brassfest in 1996 at Cal State Long Beach.

Ritchie studied trumpet with Dr. Frank Baird for his Bachelor of Music Degree in 1965 and Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in 1973 at CU Boulder. He also attended Yale University for a Master’s degree in 1967 where he worked with Robert Nagel. Ritchie was a member and soloist with the United States “President’s Own” Marine Band during the Vietnam War. One of his fondest memories is performing as “the” trumpet soloist for Lady Bird Johnson’s wedding.

From 1973 to 2001, Ritchie was the Trumpet Professor at California State University, Fresno and received emeritus status in 2003. Ritchie was extremely proud of his former students who have gone on to distinguished careers.

Ritchie retired to Colorado and was one of the most kind and generous humans. He was passionate, knowledgeable, empathetic, and incredibly invested in the next generation. He loved the trumpet and will be remembered for his gorgeous tone and exquisite musicianship. He was an inspiration, and an exceptional person, musician, and trumpet player. (Source: Ryan Gardner)
