Greater Idaho ITG Chapter 2025 Trumpet Day

The Greater Idaho Chapter of the International Trumpet Guild held a trumpet day on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Brigham Young University- Idaho in Rexburg, Idaho. The event featured trumpet students and professors from Idaho State University, Boise State University, and BYU- Idaho, as well as junior high and high school students from the area of Southeast Idaho. The guest artist for the event was renowned orchestral trumpet player, and trumpet professor, Charles Daval. Other featured guests from our chapter included Andy Allphin BYU-Idaho, Zach Buie from Boise State, Eddie Ludema and Logan Anderson from Idaho State University, and Steve Klingler from Madison High School.

Charles Daval held a morning event called “Begin the Day the Chicowicz Way.” He led the group of students and professors through a routine and explanation of his teacher Vincent Chicowicz’ flow studies. Later that day, Mr. Daval presented an orchestral based masterclass using the excerpts Pines of Rome (off-stage solo), Petrushka (ballerina), Pictures (promenade), and Mahler V (opening.)

There were other masterclasses held where students from the participating universities played solos and were given feedback by our featured guests. Zach Buie from Boise State University presented a lecture entitled Developing a Project Driven Career. The focus of this presentation was to inspire trumpeters in all levels to pursue goals and projects that will prepare them and move them forward in achieving their goals.

All participants of the event played in a recital at the end of the day. The students were led in a large trumpet ensemble of roughly 25 players, which consisted mostly of collegiate players. The guest artists and faculty participated in a trumpet ensemble work together that hopefully inspired the younger players in attendance. Then, each artist performed a solo work of varying style. The gorgeous pieces played included piccolo trumpet works, transcriptions, and lyrical solos. (Source: Andrew Allphin)
