In Memoriam: Steve Hendrickson (1951–2022)

ITG mourns the passing of Steve Hendrickson.

Hendrickson is best known for serving as Principal Trumpet of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC, for 27 years, following which he became Assistant Principal Trumpet. He earned a degree in music and philosophy from Luther College in 1973. He studied with many Chicago's leading brass players, including Adolph Herseth and Arnold Jacobs. Prior to joining the National Symphony in 1982, he was a freelance musician in Chicago, where he performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera, and the Chicago Brass Ensemble. He did all of this while working as a stock broker on the Chicago Stock Exchange.

With the National Symphony, he appeared as a soloist performing Bach, Vivaldi, Arutiunian, Persichetti, and Haydn. In 2006, he made a recording for MSR Classics featuring music from the Baroque to contemporary eras.

Hendrickson served as an adjunct faculty member at several DC-area universities and mentored countless young trumpet players. He continued making music in the Washington area as a recitalist and chamber musician until his passing.
