In Memoriam: Giuseppe Bodanza
ITG mourns the passing of Giuseppe ”Pippo” Bodanza.
Bodanza was principal trumpet of the Teatro La Scala Orchestra in Milan, Italy, from 1963 until 2000. According to former ITG Board Member Andrea Tofanelli, Bodanza "represented for the Italian trumpet world what probably Bud Herseth or Philip Smith represented for the American trumpet world."
Bodanza's successor in the orchestra, Francesco Tamiati, writes, "I think today of him as a man who lived through music and his role in our theatre as a monk lives faith, with rigour and dedication. I was privileged as well as fortunate to work alongside him, to learn and listen to the purity and beauty of his sound, the construction of phrases: it didn’t just sound great, in his sound there was the whole tradition of Opera."
